Real Estate & Community Guide
Home of the Hamilton Broncs!
Hamilton is the county seat of Ravalli County and the largest community in the Bitterroot Valley. Founded in 1890 by copper magnate Marcus Daly, Hamilton was developed in connection with his lumber operations, which supplied timber to his mining interests in Anaconda. The community was named for James Hamilton, one of the men involved in laying out the original town, and incorporated in 1894. The nearby Daly Mansion remains an important reminder of the people and industries that helped shape the area's early history.
Hamilton is much more than a commercial center. It serves as the medical, educational, governmental and cultural hub of the Bitterroot Valley. Residents have access to Bitterroot Health – Marcus Daly Hospital, public schools, professional services, shopping, arts and entertainment, and a variety of fine and family dining options. Historic downtown Hamilton is home to local businesses, galleries, restaurants and community gathering places. Educational opportunities, cultural programs, live performances and community organizations contribute to the area's active civic life.
Agriculture remains an important part of Hamilton's identity. Farms, ranches, hay fields and irrigated ground continue to shape the surrounding landscape and economy. The annual Ravalli County Fair and Rodeo brings the region's agricultural and western heritage together with livestock exhibitions, 4-H and FFA projects, rodeo performances, local vendors, entertainment and a traditional parade.
Outdoor recreation is close in nearly every direction. West of town, Blodgett Canyon and its surrounding trail system provide access to the Bitterroot National Forest and Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. The Blodgett Overlook hike offers canyon views, while the more demanding Canyon Creek Trail continues toward alpine terrain and a mountain lake. Bear Creek Trail provides access to Bear Creek Falls, and Mill Creek is another established destination for hiking and horseback riding, with facilities for visitors traveling with stock.
Lake Como, south of Hamilton, offers boating, swimming, fishing and a seven-mile recreational loop popular with hikers and mountain bikers. The Bitterroot Trail, whose southern terminus is near Hamilton, provides a paved route for walking, running and cycling, extending approximately 44 miles north toward Missoula.
Hamilton combines the services and amenities of a regional center with a working agricultural landscape, historic character, arts and culture, and access to some of western Montana's most recognized outdoor destinations.
