Home of the Darby Tigers!

Darby is a wonderful little old west town, made famous by the hit show Yellowstone filmed at the Chief Joseph Ranch located just south of town.

Tucked into the southern Bitterroot Valley, Darby is a small town of about 780 people with a walkable Main Street and direct access to the Bitterroot National Forest’s 1.6 million acres. Fly fishing on the Bitterroot River, paddling and hiking at Lake Como, and camping and boating at Painted Rocks State Park, 24 miles south, are all close by.

The valley is the traditional homeland of the Salish people, and Darby’s Salish name translates roughly to “place where they would lift something.” Settlers arrived in the 1880s, and the town was officially established in 1889, named for James W. Darby, who signed its post office application. It began as a mining and fur-trading outpost, then grew on timber, orchards, and cattle. In the early 1900s the area boomed on logging and apples. The Forest Service shaped the town too: nearby Alta Ranger Station, built in 1899, is the oldest surviving ranger station in the country, and the Depression-era Darby Ranger Station, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, now serves as a museum and visitor center. The 1886 Pioneer Memorial Museum keeps the pioneer era alive. Darby started fade after the mill shut down

Darby started to face after the mill shut down, but today Darby has found new life as a destination location, drawing visitors from around the world who come to enjoy life in the mountains, take in a professional rodeo event at the world class rodeo arena, or visit the Chief Joseph Ranch (aka Dutton Ranch from Yellowstone).
